Badlands

Badlands explores the repetitive landscape of Badlands National Park. At first glance, the landscape appears almost entirely beige, but this painting shows the subtle variations in color, depth, and texture within the formations. I used a palette knife to build up the unique shapes and textures of the rock, allowing the marks to show the unusual formations.

One of the things that intrigued me most was seeing small flowers blossoming in the middle of such a barren landscape. Their presence reminded me that life can thrive in places that seem empty and harsh, while showing the depth and color hidden within the beige.
